When you walk into a room, your style is your first form of self expression. Before you even get a chance to say hello or introduce yourself, your style is already speaking volumes. Which is pretty cool that it can be the first way that you express to the world who you are!
Which is why it’s really important to confidently pull together an outfit that speaks to who you are and the message you’re intending to send.
I’m going sharing FIVE ways to boost your style & to help you feel like the most stylish person in the room!
1. Create Interest w/ Texture
A question that I often get asked is “How to make outfits look intentional. Even if I’m just throwing on something easy… how can I make it look like I tried?”
And to that I say… pay attention to the textures of your fabrics and make them interesting. Texture is found in the thickness and appearance of the fabric. So different textures could be dull or shiny, fuzzy or sheer or furry or smooth. Right? There’s all these different textures we can work with, and by mixing textures together— it’ll bring depth and interest to an outfit. This is especially true if you are going for a more tonal or monochromatic look.
If you have just one texture throughout your outfit… so let’s say everything is matte— like a cotton or canvas, your outfit is going to look flat and be easy to miss. But if you bring in patent leather boots and a silk cami and chunky wool sweater…there’s going to be a lot to look at. It’s going to make your outfit look more interesting. It’s going to make YOU look more interesting, more clever, and more intentional.
2. Get To Know Your Body Shape
Do you know what the golden rule is of stylish women?
Fit first.
With that, getting to know your body shape is key.
So if you consider yourself a petite inverted triangle and prefer to highlight your narrow hips then build your closet with clothes that put the spotlight on your shape and favorite features.
If you don’t know your body shape, I created an entire series where I teach you how to determine what your shape is and then tips on how to dress it. It is like an easy 1. 2. Punch. You can check it out—
3. The Magic Three
In interior design, stylists suggest grouping items together in groups of three to create balance and depth. Whether you are styling a shelf or placing pillows together on a couch, that holds true. In wardrobe styling, this idea works the same way. And I like to call it The Magic Three. The Magic Three is that 3rd piece that is going to round-out an outfit and make it feel extra special. And help it look more polished and complete.
So aside from your top and your bottom, what’s that 3rd piece that’s going to create interest and intention to your outfit?
Examples of this could be— a blazer, a hat, a killer printed shoe, even a scarf!
Any of these pieces are going to work to bring in more style and depth to your outfit
4. Anchor Your Look With One Expensive-Looking Piece
Ever wonder how some women make even jeans and a t-shirt look impossibly chic? It has a lot to do with the fit, of course, but there's another subtle way these ladies are elevating their outfit—It might be a great leather belt, a special pair of earrings, or a luxe bag, but in every case, one expensive-looking accessory adds infinitely more polish to your look.
You could be wearing an entire outfit from H&M, but if you add a killer pair of shoes, no one is going to know the rest of the outfit was a bargain. I can’t recommend enough mixing high and low-priced pieces. It’ll elevate your entire look.
5. Be Bold & Step Out Of your Comfort Zone
Ladies…We are given one life! You are only going to be 28 or 32 or 55… or whatever your age...for ONE YEAR. Time goes too fast to worry about what others are thinking about you. Because I can guarantee they’re not worrying even half as much about YOU as they are about themselves.
So live, ladies!! It never hurts to try something new.
Whether that includes a bright new color that stands out from your usual neutral palette, or shifting from skinny jeans to a boyfriend silhouette, great style is built from trying new things. So the next time you’re headed out, swipe that bright lip on or pop on that fun snakeskin heel, and own in! Be bold! And get comfortable with who you want to be.
